Our senior citizen puppies

We have used this blog for almost 2 years now to keep our loved ones informed of the events in our life. We have always been able to share happy moments, great memories, and good times in our life. This post is a little different than the usual ones.
Monopoly and Jaxon have been a part of our lives for a long long time. Monopoly turns 9 in a few weeks and Jax turns 11 in May. Although our pups love to play (Monopoly mostly with humans and jaxy pretty much wants to play with anything or anyone at anytime)they don't have major medical problems, eat and go to the bathroom normally, we still knew that soon the boys would start entering their "older age". About 2 weeks ago, Monopoly started acting extremely out of character. For those who know "M Junior" (M Junior or MJ is one of Monopoly's many nicknames, Junior because he is Monica's junior) know that he is extremely smart, extremely verbal, a little socially awkward, socially phobic and never ever ever does anything to disappoint his owners (i.e., have bathroom accidents in the house, go through garbage, etc). Well 2 weeks ago, Monopoly had 2 bathroom accidents and was requesting tons of water. Believe me, he does use his paw and voice to inform you of his needs. Monopoly would also wake up early in the morning and run to the door. He was deviating from his schedule and Monica knew something was not right. During the same time, Jaxon began coughing and at the end of his cough session he would throw up slightly. We made an appointment to see the vet on Saturday. Monica had already convinced herself that Monopoly had diabetes and that Jaxon had some sort of upper respiratory infection. The vet drew blood, obtained samples of urine, took their vitals and listened to our list of concerns. Dr. Vivian decided to test Monopoly's glucose right there and then in order to get the blood sugar results that same day. After a few minutes, Dr. Vivian walked into the cold vet exam room with brownish walls and informed us that indeed MJ had Diabetes. She told us that the normal level for dogs was between 80 and 150 and MJ had a blood sugar reading greater than 400. Monica was prepared for the information she heard, however neither of us were prepared to hear that our little baby had to be immediately hospitalized until his blood sugar was controlled. DEFINITELY NOT PREPARED FOR THAT!
As Monica sobbed, we waited to hear the outcome of our other boy. Dr. Vivian prior to the X-rays thought Jaxon had a heart problem. After the X-Rays, she determined our older boy had an enlarged heart and a collapsed trachea. Fortunately, no need for medication, surgery or hospitalization! Relief....thank goodness
This past weekend was a very tough weekend for the Mennite's. We missed our little man dearly. Jaxon hardly moved or ate and kept looking for his brother. We were not sure how long he would have to stay in the hospital and Dr. Vivian could not give us an estimated discharge date.
Monopoly is home and doing well! He has to have an insulin injection twice a day and his diet needs some modifications. He is acting like himself and according to the prognosis he will be ok for a few more years! YAY!!
For those of you who do not know Monopoly as a 4 week old baby was diagnosed with Parvovirus. The survival rate is extremely low however he beat the odds and was given a purple heart survivor medallion when he was discharged from the hospital. This little fellow is a strong boy ;)
We would like to thank our supporting family and friends. Your prayers, kind messages, and thoughts kept us positive in very hard moments. Thanks for all the love.

Both babies and mommy are doing well and waiting anxiously for Friday to see daddy and spend the weekend together!

Moral of the story: Be observant and be pro-active and enjoy your loved ones to the maximum every single day.

Please enjoy a pic of MJ and a video of Jax welcoming his brother home!

A broom and the salt bottle

So we finally moved this weekend! How is it that we still have so much crap??? The move is really what inspired this blog story. I've been with Monica for some years now and during those years, we have had MANY moves, so I still don't now how Monica's superstitious "Colombian" beliefs still amuse me! According to Monica's family, when one moves, they leave behind the old broom and the bottle of salt. The reason is because you leave the bad luck from the old home (symbolized by the broom and salt bottle) and you buy new ones representing the good luck that will come in the new home. The funny part is that I can probably write a book regarding Monica and her family's superstitions (spiders, flies, pearls, dolls, glass breaking, the list goes on and on, but those other stories will be for future blogs). For now let's focus on the broom and the salt. It was our first night in the new place, monIca and I decided to grill out in celebration for a ha...

Gain or no Gain

So quick funny story.... It might be one of those "you had to be there stories" but I will try since it caused a lot of laughter for us. Last sunday we were at Sam's club buying our monthly stuff. We knew we needed detergent so we went to the cleaning aisle and looked for the gain detergent that we have been buying for many months now. It was such a great deal, we would get 133 onz for a little over 9 dollars. That's many many many loads of laundry. So as we walked down the aisle, I realized Peter had overlooked our great "gain" bottle. I yelled down the aisle "Pete it's right here, this is the one". Peter turns and smiles, holding in the laughter. He then said, well....now I know why our detergent has been sooooooo inexpensive. He then continued by saying, look at the bottle a little closer. We had been using the same bottle for such a long time now that I felt I knew every color, every letter, felt like a could describe the handle...
