So we realized we had way too much crap and as we prepare to begin this year, we have made a few decisions (we say we begin the year in May because last year we moved to Albany, Monica started a new job, we got married and we signed our lease all in May):
1. I will be commuting to finish my last 4 semesters (he will more than likely be attending Georgia Tech in Atlanta for this) and thus MOn and pete will be apart during the week.
2. Monica refuses to do yard work by herself, mow the lawn, and live in a house that is WAY TOO BIG for her and the boys.
3. We have decided to down grade and move to a small, quaint, 2 bedroom apartment across the street from where we live right now.
4. We have way too much CRAP and it will not fit in the new apartment
5. As always we do it all at once, which means we will be going on vacation for 2 weeks and upon returning we have 1 week to move out!
6. Again, we have too much crap, When did we get so much crap
Ok, so now that you know our thought process and know about all the things stated above, you can probably agree with our decision to have a YARD sale. (Here is where it gets a bit funny) Peter put the yard sale ad in the newspaper and we also made a couple of signs to go around the neighborhood. Yesterday, Friday 4/29/2011, as soon as we got home from work, we started setting up for the big day. Monica thought that it was a good idea to stage the yard sale like it was an apartment with different segments of the yard representing a specific room. She REALLY enjoyed setting up the living room, dining room, closet, etc..... she even asked if it was customary to provide beverages and snacks LOL! (How cute is she) After she was done telling me how to arrange the YARD sale "expo hall", she sat quietly and said "What if nobody shows up?" She was truly pre-occupied and concern with this possibility. I told her that "that's just the risk we have to take", a response that clearly did not make her happy.... at ALL! I gave her a glass of wine and invited her to a delicious sushi dinner, in hopes to distract her never ending mind and yard sale failure fixation. SUCCESS!!!! since we live in Albany now and there is never anything going on on the weekends, as soon as we came back from dinner, she was so exhausted, she just passed out while watching our tivo episode of Grey's Anatomy. Ok confession, I fell asleep as well, so technically I am not sure who fell asleep first. Anyways, this morning I got up bright and early at 6 am, giving myself enough time to put the last finishing touches until the official start time of the YARD sale, which was 8 AM. Monica woke up a bit shortly after and joined me outside. It was about 7:03 am, when about 7 people showed up. These people were not messing around, they had a mission, they had a strategy and they were pros at the yard/garage sale thing. Monica was speechless, (funny right? especially for all those who know her who know she is NEVER speechless) she was SO overwhelmed with everything, the bargaining techniques, the straight forward no messing around aggressive personalities and the amount of people present, that in a period of a few seconds she was gone! LOL Monica was nowhere to be found! When that initial mad rush finally concluded, I looked around to find her and noticed she was sitting in the Hyundai, right in the car deck. I was very confused (again those of you who know Monica know she hates the Hyundai and NEVER EVER does she go in it) now you can understand my confusion, as I walk toward the car, she comes out and says "I tried to move it, but the key wouldn't work", without allowing me to respond she precedes to say "Would you like me to go buy us some coffee?" I asked her what was wrong and she said, this is making me very nervous, I can't negotiate or tolerate pricing comebacks! (Once again, I do not mean to beat this horse, but Monica usually never has a problem with comebacks, arguments or with negotiation, in fact her family and friends often tell her she should of been a lawyer due to her persuasive and arguing talents).
I stayed out managing the yard sale and Monica, after going to get coffee, sat inside with the dogs, occasionally popping her head out and asking me how it was going. So the yard sale was a TOTAl success, we sold almost everything and got a decent chunk of change to cover some dinners in Tahiti and Bora Bora :). All I can say is Im glad we did it but so happy its over.
Moral of the story: People buy crap you would never think of. The saying "somebody's trash is someone else's treasure" is VERY true; and don't ask my wife to help you on a garage/yard sale....well except if you need coffee!
PS: sorry we have no pictures, you all know that Monica is the picture person and she was hiding all day!
